OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever announces his departure from the company

Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and chief scientist of OpenAI, recently announced his departure from the company after almost ten years. His exit coincides with the launch of GPT-4o. GPT-4o is their latest model that is capable of engaging in realistic voice conversations and interactions involving texts and images.

Sutskever was involved in the events surrounding CEO Sam Altman’s departure and subsequent return last November. Despite initially supporting Altman’s firing, he later changed his stance and signed a letter from employees advocating for Altman’s reinstatement. Following Altman’s comeback, Sutskever was removed from the board, leading to uncertainty about his role within the company.

ChatGPT, introduced in late 2022, quickly gained popularity, attracting 100 million monthly active users in record time. However, the website experienced fluctuations in global traffic over the past year. They only recently recovering to its May 2023 peak, as reported by Similarweb.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, expressed his regret over Ilya Sutskever’s departure from the company. He announced that Research Director Jakub Pachocki would take over as the new chief scientist.
