US government withdraws licenses for Intel and Qualcomm to provide semiconductor chips to Huawei

US government withdraws licenses for Intel and Qualcomm to provide semiconductor chips to Huawei.

Interestingly, earlier this year, AMD, Intel’s competitor, found themselves in a similar predicament when their license application was rejected by the US Department of Commerce. The details surrounding the license revocation have been kept confidential, leaving many curious about the underlying reasons.

On the other hand, Qualcomm has been supplying Huawei with older 4G networking chips under a 2020 license. However, they anticipate a decline in business next year. Concerns have been raised about potential violations of US sanctions, as Qualcomm has been licensing its 5G technology to Huawei.

Republican Representative Elise Stefanik firmly believes that revoking these licenses will bolster US national security, safeguard intellectual property rights, and curtail China’s technological advancement capabilities.

The impact of this decision on the future of the US-China tech relationship remains uncertain.
